Virgin and Child Enthroned and Donor, Angels

Pietro Lorenzetti

Sienna, Italy, Europe

This painting named, Virgin and Child Enthroned and Donor, Angels, was created around the time 1319 by the artist Pietro Lorenzetti. Lorenzetti was a European artist and his birthplace is unknown but his work was done around Siena, Italy. [1] This painting depicts Mary the Mother of God holding her son Jesus, in the top portion of this painting, there are two angels looking down upon Mary and Jesus. In the lower left corner of this painting, there is a man in the clothing of a friar or monk, the title of this piece and the little significance of this man leads many to believe that he is the donor and commissioned this art piece.[2]

This exhibitions purpose is to show relationships through time periods and cultures about the representation of Mary the Mother of God. This is important because many do not know about the other representations of Mary and only see her as the Virgin or solely as Jesus' mother.
