Responding to Medieval Art

Works of art are made to be seen, and made to inspire a response.

The responses they inspire are a part of their history—a history that extends from the time they were made to the present moment.

The exhibitions collected here reflect a series of modern responses to medieval works undertaken by the students of HART 212: "Medieval Art and Architecture," taught by Dr. Maeve Doyle at Bryn Mawr College in Spring 2017. Some of those responses are scholarly: students have researched aspects of works of art that sparked their curiosity. Other responses are artistic: reconstructions or reinterpretations of medieval works. All represent students' creative responses to objects they have encountered in museums, and all reflect the enduring power of medieval art for a modern audience.
